Edwin W. Wood (1820-1905)
Edwin Wellington Wood was born in Middlefield, Otsego County to a farm family. As a youngster he helped out on the farm in the spring, summer, and fall months. During the winter months he attended the local district school and when he became of age for a higher education he attended the Clinton Liberal Institute when it was located in Clinton, NY. Upon finishing his education he engaged in the grocery business as a member of the firm, Davis and Wood. In 1844 he moved to Fort Plain and entered into the wholesale and retail grocery business with various partners. His business, Clark & Wood was located at the corner of Canal and River Street on the Erie Canal. He retired from the business in 1881. Mr. Wood was well-known throughout the village and contributed much to the growth of Fort Plain. He was instrumental in bringing to Fort Plain the Spring and Axle Works in 1876 and the Clinton Liberal Institute in 1879. He also was one of the organizers of the Fort Plain National Bank and held the position of President of that institution for many years. Other positions held by Mr. Wood were company officer and stockholder in the Fort Plain Gas and Electric Company, president of the Fort Plain Knitting Company, and trustee of the Fort Plain Female Seminary.I'm a paragraph.
