Andrew Dunn was born in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. At the age of 10 years he immigrated to America with his parents David and Helen Dunn. His father was a calico printer and after landing in New York City he moved his family to Fall River, Massachusetts where he had hoped to find a job in the print mills. Finding no job he moved the family again to West Galway, New York where he engaged in farming. In 1844 the family moved to Stockport, New York where he was able to work at his profession of printer until the mill burned in 1847. Little Falls, New York was the next place the family settled where he established a rug mill. By this time, Andrew was 17 years old and he had left the family and made his way to Amsterdam, New York. He began learning the jewelry business under the tutelage of James Pooley. Within a short time he became a master at his trade and moved to Fort Plain, New York in 1851 where he established his jewelry business on Canal Street. His business became very successful and in 1880 he partnered with his son, Andrew, and the business became A. Dunn & Sons. Andrew Dunn had an active life in the village of Fort Plain. Like Edwin Wood, he helped to organize and promote several businesses in Fort Plain such as the Fort Plain Spring and Axle Works, the Fort Plain Gas and Electric Company, and the Fort Plain Knitting Mill. He also served as Vice-President of the Fort Plain National Bank, President of the Fort Plain Cemetery Association, Treasurer of the municipal water commission, and Elder of the Fort Plain Reformed Church. On June 13, 1855 Mr. Dunn married Louise Gros, granddaughter of Captain Lawrence Gros who served under Marinus Willett in the Revolutionary War. The Dunn’s had three children, Ellen, David, and Andrew.
